What is a Windows VPS?
A Windows VPS is a Windows computer that lives in a data center. You rent it by the month and use it from your own device over the internet. This guide explains how it works in plain words.
The idea in one paragraph
A VPS (virtual private server) is one large physical server that has been split into several smaller virtual servers. Each one acts like its own computer, with its own operating system, its own files and its own IP address. On a Windows VPS, that operating system is Windows Server. You log in through Remote Desktop and use it like a normal Windows computer.
How it differs from your own PC
| Your PC | A Windows VPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is | In front of you | In a data center |
| Power and internet | Your own | Provided and monitored by the host |
| On all day? | Only if you leave it on | Yes, designed to stay on |
| How you use it | Directly | Over the internet with Remote Desktop |
| IP address | Changes or is shared | Its own IP address |
What people use a Windows VPS for
- Running Windows programs around the clock, such as business apps, scheduled tasks or bots
- Working from any device on the same desktop
- Testing software or websites on a clean Windows machine
- Hosting a small Windows-only service or internal tool
- Having a server in another country, for example to see a site the way a visitor there sees it
Check the acceptable use policy before you start. Spam, malware and illegal activity are not allowed on any server.
What you get
On a FOMZE Windows VPS you get:
- Windows Server 2016, 2019 or 2022
- full Administrator (RDP) access, so you can install what you need
- your own IP address
- unlimited traffic
- a choice of seven regions
Most servers are ready 45 to 60 minutes after payment.
What a VPS is not
- It is not a website host. You can run a website on it, but you set everything up yourself. See Windows VPS vs shared hosting.
- It is not a dedicated server. You share the physical machine with other customers. See Windows VPS vs dedicated server.
- It is not managed for you. You are the administrator. You install software, keep Windows updated and look after security. See how to secure a Windows VPS.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Windows VPS the same as a cloud server?
Close. Both are virtual servers. "Cloud server" is a broader name used by many hosting companies for the same kind of product.
Do I need technical skills?
You need to be comfortable using Windows. If you can use a Windows PC, you can use a Windows VPS. Setup and security take a little more care, and our guides cover them.
Can I use it from a phone?
Yes, with the Remote Desktop or Windows App for Android and iPhone. A laptop is more comfortable for regular work.
Can I cancel?
You can cancel any time so the server does not renew. Any purchase or renewal can also be refunded within 14 days. See the [refund policy](/refund).
